2021 State of Mental Health in America

“HELP IS ON THE WAY!”

                                                    Jeremiah 33:14-16 (KJV)
14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.

10/20/2020 Mental Health America (MHA) released its annual State of Mental Health in America Report, which ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on several mental health and access measures.

  • It was determined that 19% (47.1 million) of people in the U.S. are living with a mental health condition nationwide, a 1.5 million increase over 2019’s report.
  • As the pandemic relentlessly persists, they are seeing the highest levels of anxiety and depression reported since the pandemic officially hit the U.S. in March 2020.
  • This is a troubling trend being fueled by loneliness and isolation.
  • The report also states alarming numbers of children reporting thoughts of suicide and self-harm.
  • The 2021 State of Mental Health in America report confirms that mental health in the U.S. continues to get worse and many states are ill-prepared to handle this crisis, and policymakers at every level of government need to act immediately.

2021-2022 Key Findings

  • In 2019, just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 19.86% of adults experienced a mental illness, equivalent to nearly 50 million Americans.
  • Suicidal ideation continues to increase among adults in the U.S. 4.58% of adults report having serious thoughts of suicide, an increase of 664,000 people from the previous year.
  • A growing percentage of youth in the U.S. live with major depression. 15.08% of youth experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, and up to 19% of youth ages 12-17 experienced major depression.
  • Over 2.5 million youth in the U.S. have severe depression, and multiracial youth are at greatest risk. 10.6% of youth in the U.S. have severe major depression (depression that severely affects functioning). The rate of severe depression was highest among youth who identified as more than one race, at 14.5% (more than one in every seven multiracial youth).
  • Over half of adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment, totaling over 27 million adults in the U.S. who are going untreated.
  • The percentage of adults with a mental illness who report unmet need for treatment has increased every year since 2011. In 2019, 24.7% of adults with a mental illness report an unmet need for treatment.
  • Over 60% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment. Even in states with the greatest access, nearly one in three are going without treatment.
  • Nationally, fewer than 1 in 3 youth with severe depression receive consistent mental health care.
  • Both adults and youth in the U.S. continue to lack adequate insurance coverage. 11.1% of Americans with a mental illness are uninsured. 8.1% of children had private insurance that did not cover mental health services, totaling 950,000 youth.
  • Rates of substance use are increasing for youth and adults, even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. 7.74% of U.S. adults and 4.08% of youth had a substance use disorder in the past year.

This report includes spotlights on two of MHA’s policy priorities in 2021-2022 –

  • the implementation of 988 as the national three-digit suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline
  • and increasing mental health education and supports in schools, particularly for BIPOC youth. = Black, Indigenous, People Of Color

However, the dilemma we face is this; we as a Kingdom of Kings and Priests through oppression, psychological enslavement, and Plantation Theology have had our FAITH as Kingdom Citizens, spiral down into an abyss of emotional and psychological cycles of chaos, and perpetuated generational epidemics of self imposed trauma. But the Elohim God our Father troubled my heart, my emotions, and my psychology to tell the True Church of God
